Martin McGuinness: "Fundamental Change is needed in Irish Society"

Sinn Féin, November 28, 2010

KILMICHAEL, in west County Cork, is legendary. On Sunday, November 28th, another legend in Irish republican history, Martin McGuinness, was the main speaker on the actual anniversary of the famous Kilmichael Ambush of 90 years ago when 36 IRA Volunteers dealt a heavy blow to a mighty British Empire. And, as always in Irish history, there is a lesson in the resistance of the men of Kilmichael to wrong-doing and injustice that has a resonance today. Sinn Féin’s Martin McGuinness made this the theme of his address. read more >>

Statement on the detention of seven members of Askapena

28.09.2010 | Euskal Herriaren Lagunak - Friends of the Basque Country Germany

We were horrified this morning hearing the news about the detention of seven political activists of the Basque organisation Askapena.

For decades Askapena has been active promoting international solidarity, in Latin America and elsewhere. On the other hand Askapena organizes solidarity for the Basque Country. We are collaborating with Askapena in this, for example with an annual Week of Solidarity with the Basque Country, organized by Askapena on a world wide basis. read more >>

Yesterday more than 30 Basque organisations, five parties included, signed an "AGREEMENT FOR A SCENARIO OF PEACE AND DEMOCRATIC SOLUTION" in the Basque town of Gernika (Spanish: Guernica).

Gernika and the picture of Picasso are a symbol of the long Spanish-Basque conflict. The foto shows the frontpage of the agreement. Gerry Adams calls for release of Arnaldo Otegi

July 18, 2010 | Sinn Féin News, July 15, 2010

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams has called on the Spanish Government to release Basque Nationalist Leader Arnaldo Otegi.

Gerry Adams said that Arnaldo Otegi's continued imprisonment made building a peace process in the Basque country more difficult:
"The continued imprisonment of Basque nationalist leader Arnaldo Otegi is not only undemocratic, but flies in the face of the most basic principles of conflict resolution. Arnaldo was arrested and imprisoned in October 2009 with other members of the Basque independence movement including Rafa Diez former secretary general of the trade union LAB.

Having been in the Basque Country many times and knowing Arnaldo personally I am convinced that his primary political aim is to bring about a democratic and peaceful resolution to the conflict between the Basque Country and France and Spain. read more >>

Equality and partnership are central to all of this

The Ard Chomhairle has been meeting throughout the day and Martin McGuinness and I have been briefing colleagues on the detail of the recent discussions with the DUP. Gerry Adams: A Family Trauma

Jan 12, 2010

This is a personal statement of Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams published in his blog on January 12, 2010. He deals with the difficult and traumatic situation of his familie after discovering that father and brother Liam abused their own children. Originally we didn't feel it appropriate to pubish anything about this issue, because it's a very private tragedy. We felt that Gerry Adams and his family dealt with the situation in a very dignified way, especially with allowing the victims to decide about how to proceed. In general the media in Germany dealt with this issue in an appropriate way. Unfortunately in recent days, Ralf Sotschek, who writes for the taz about Ireland, tried to use this issue for cheap political slander. Therefore we decided to give people a chance to read Gerry Adams own view on the issue. read more >>
