Elections in Ireland 2011
Counting is still ongoing, but the main results are already there:
- Fianna Fail lost more than 24% and doesn't play a political role within the next government. The electorate clearly
reject the anti social agenda.
- The coming government will be lead by Fine Gael, who won the election with 36%. But with their 70 seats they have to
find a coalition partner, probably the social democratic Labour. It's quite clear that this will only lead to minor
cosmetical changes in the politics of the Irish government.
- Sinn Féin was able to treble their seats, increasing their presence in the Dáil from 5 TDs to 13 TDs (this number could
even be increased by 1-2 after the recounts finally achieve a result). This is the real sensation of this election. They will
be able to be a strong opposition in the Irish Parliament.
