Legalisation of Sortu positive step in Basque peace process

22.6.2012 | Basque Peace Process

Sinn Féin MLA Gery Kelly has welcomed the legalisation of the Basque political part Sortu. Sortu, when founded in February of 2011 was declared illegal under the draconian Party's Law with the Spanish Government stating that it was linked to ETA.

Speaking today Mr Kelly said:

"The legalisation of Sortu is a positive move for the Peace Process and is to be welcomed. The right of the electorate to vote for representatives of their choice is paramount in any democratic system.

"Sortu has very clearly committed itself to peaceful and democratic methods and opposition to the use of violence. This too is welcome. The logic of the this is that key peace makers such as Arnaldo Otegi and his comrades, who were imprisoned for helping establish Sortu, should be released.

"I would encourage all those involved and especially the Spanish Government to push for a meaningful and just dialogue process aimed at resolving outstanding issues."
