Peoples' Referendum on Irish Unity

7.5.2013 | Sinn Féin Political Update No. 17, 7th May 2013

The electoral areas of Crossmaglen in South Armagh and Creggan Upper in North Louth will go to the polls in the first People's Referendum on Irish Unity on the 25th May.

'United Ireland - You Decide' A People's Referendum is a local community initiative, which sets out to begin the debate about Irish unity at a grassroots level and specifically to raise awareness of the provision for a Border Poll in the Good Friday Agreement. It is an initiative to let the people have their say.

Under the Good Friday Agreement the British Secretary of State has the power to make an order to direct the holding of a poll on Irish Unity. This is to be done where there is a 'demonstrable demand' for a United Ireland. This campaign is setting out to demonstrate this demand.

The first People's Referenda was launched in Crossmaglen on Friday 3rd May. It will involve a 3 week campaign including canvassing and events including a debate.

We are calling on politicians from all parties to support this initiative being rolled out by a broad community based group in Crossmaglen and Creggan Upper in North Louth.

This could be the first in a series of referenda and people from other areas are welcome to come and see how it is being organised.

The campaign is looking for young people and as well as elected reps to participate in the campaign. All nationalists and republicans on the island are being asked to support the campaign online - including following and retweeting the campaigns.
